Undergraduate students at St. John’s have a unique opportunity to study the great books at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. After earning a bachelor’s at St. John’s, students can enroll more easily and affordably in the Graduate Institute.

• BA + Master of Arts in Eastern Classics (MAEC): This pathway is open to all alumni of the undergraduate program. Applicants qualify for the streamlined application process outlined below and students who apply for need-based financial aid automatically receive a grant worth 25 percent of the tuition (and more depending on need up to 50 percent of tuition coverage).
• BA + Master of Arts in Liberal Art (MALA): This pathway is open to St. John’s graduates who received a BA at least five years earlier. Applicants qualify for the streamlined application process outlined below and students who apply for need-based financial aid automatically receive a grant worth 25 percent of the tuition (and more depending on need up to 50 percent of tuition coverage).
• Alumni Application Requirements: As a St. John’s graduate, you know St. John’s and the Program. As a result, we have reduced some of the application requirements for BA recipients applying to the Graduate Institute.
  • Skip the first essay regarding your previous education and reasons for interest in the Graduate Institute.
  • Attach a paper you wrote at St. John’s in lieu of the second essay. Pick your best work—even your senior essay.
  • Your two letters of recommendation may come from tutors at the college. We suggest it!

St. John’s partners with the University of Maryland Carey School of Law to allow students to earn a MA and JD within four years. This partnership is open to all students admitted to the Master of Arts in Liberal Arts program at St. John’s and the JD program at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law. While the St. John’s MALA classes can be done online through the low-residency program, all JD classes must be completed in person on the University of Maryland campus. Each institution accepts nine dual-degree credits from the other program.

St. John’s partners with Notre Dame of Maryland University so students may complete our Liberal Arts Education Certificate (LAEC) program and Notre Dame of Maryland University’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree. This allows individuals to be certified to teach in Maryland, New Mexico, and many other states.

This partnership is open to all students admitted in the Liberal Arts Education Certificate, and individuals in the Liberal Arts Masters program who enroll in the pedagogy preceptorial. 18 credit hours of the Liberal Arts Education Certificate, including the three-credit pedagogy preceptorial, will be applied to the MAT. Classes can be completed online in both programs.

The St. John’s College Graduate Institute has partnered with the United States Naval Academy to offer Master of Liberal Arts degrees to midshipmen who, upon completion of their degree at St. John’s, return to the Yard to teach in diverse departments.
